Today, March 5th, marks the second anniversary of absinthe being legalized in the US (although Lucid Absinthe didn’t actually hit the market for a few months afterward). So, Happy Anniversary  to absintheurs all over the US.

So what do you guys think is the best Absinthe, one of the americans or one of the europeans?

We have some very good absinthes here in the US, and I drink them on a regular basis, but I’d still have to say my favorites are the European ones. The Euro absinthes, to me anyhow, have richer more full bodied flavors. They also are stronger in my opinion. Although as time goes by I expect more of the European brands will be available here in the US. I have severall favorites among the Euro brands that include Epoque, LaBleue Clandestine, Alandia’s Maison, all of the Eichelbergers, and Ted Breaux’s PF 1901.

What is your experience how the Absinthe is served in bars. Mostly the traditional way or as a shot / mixer?

The better, more upscale bars and restaurants always serve absinthe in the traditional way. Most of them have the glasses, spoons and fountains. I do know that some less respectable establishments in the Phoenix area serve absinthe in the following way: pour 1 shot of absinthe in a cocktail shaker, add 1 packet of granulated sugar, some water, shake and serve. Needles to say, these places are not very succesful with absinthe, but then I don’t think they really care. To them absinthe is just another alcohol. But we know different. Right?

Hey There Absinthe Jack and the Maniac! I’m just thrilled that absinthe is legalized in the U.S. now! I think the Euro brands have a lot more practice, being around longer! I have only tried one U.S. brand and I thought it was good though not a favorite. While I’m interested in trying more american brands, I ‘m with Jack on the LeBleues and the PF 1901! The Clandestine and the La Valotes in particular, and of course the Jade PF 1901, would be hard to beat! I’d be interested in any reviews of the american brands if anybody has any recommendations!

In Switzerland we get some very fine absinthe indeed, and no, there’s no cannabis in it. And yes … its more of a psychotropic trip than any other booze I’ve ever had, definitely a slight buzz that goes in the direction of shrooms and the like.

I agree. The Swiss put out some excellent absinthes. Several of my favorites are from Switzerland.
