I just found out that yesterday was good friend and absinthe entrepeneur Mike Schallehn’s birthday. Mike is the mastermind behind both Absinthe.FM and Alandia. I hope all of you out there will join me in wishing Mike a very Happy Birthday, even if it is a wee bit late :) . Also, Mike’s second in command, Christian, will be cellebrating his “B” day on Friday. So Happy Birthday to Chris as well!

Absinthe and Hallucinations

Even though absinthe has been legal in the US for a little over 3 years now, I still get asked “Which absinthe will make me trip?”. The answer, quite simply, is none. While absinthe does have a different effect than other alcohols, it  is not a drug and will not, never did, and never will, make you hallucinate. Anyone who claims to have tripped from absinthe either has experienced the placebo effect, wherein because they believe they will hallucinate, they do. Or they’ve had some kind of drug slipped into their drink. Drinking excessive quantities of absinthe will just make you excessively drunk. Believe me, I know from experience ;)

Vintage Pernod Fils Absinthe

Recently I was fortunate enough to aquire a 50 ml. sample bottle of  vintage Pernod Fils, circa 1910. It was extremely expensive, but I’ve always wanted to try a pre-ban absinthe so I decided to give it a go. The color is a beautiful dark golden amber and the aroma is very reminiscent of a fine cognac. As I added water the louche formed rather swiftly, at first turning a caramel color, and as the glass was filled it ended up a wondeful yellow pastel. Now as to the taste – I don’t have  the adequate vocabulary  neccesary to describe  how awesome this is, so I won’t even try. Let me just say that over the past 10 years I’ve tried well over 100 different brands and this glass of Pernod Fils was the best absinthe I have ever had. If you ever get the chance (and can afford it) don’t pass it up. This was an awesomely sublime experience.

It’s the 3 year anniversary of the glorious return of the Green Fairy to the US. Can you believe it’s been that long? I urge all of you to write your Congressmen, write your Senators, hell, even write Obama and ask them to declare today,  March 5th, “Absinthe Day”,  a national holiday ;) .  All of us here at Absinthe.FM wish everyone out there a great, green day and weekend, with many more to come. Cheers

It was exactly 5 years ago today that Switzerland re-legalized absinthe after , to the day, a 100 year ban. That’s great as it gave us the wonderful Suisse La Bleue Clandestine absinthe, one of the best on the market and available here at Absinthe.FM . Coming up Friday – the 3 year anniversary of the re-legalization of absinthe here in the US.

The Bohemian Ritual at The Old Absinthe House

I was surprised, and frankly, somewhat dismayed, to find out that they are using the Bohemian ritual at The Old Absinthe House in New Orleans (thanks for that info Jessie). You would think that the oldest and most well known spot for absinthe in the US would know better.  Anyone who knows anything about absinthe realizes that you just don’t burn the sugar cube. What are these people thinking? If anybody happens to visit there, please try and talk some sense into them.

The  first annual Spirits International Prestige Awards was held November 14, 2009 in Los Angeles, Ca. A panel of 100 non-industry people voted on distilled spirits from around the world and gave out bronze, silver, gold and platinum awards. The platinum awards were announced this week. La Valote Absinthe, a very fine Swiss entry, won a well deserved platinum award. These excellent absinthes are available from our sister site www.Alandia.de . Pick yourself up a bottle and see why the judges were so impressed.
